The Matarese Circle, by Robert Ludlum

by Ch1can0 BEOWULF

This guy works for the KGB. His name is Vasili Taleniekov, codename The Snake.
He's given the assignment to kill this girl who happens to be the wife of
Brandon Alan. The initials B.A. are used to create the codename Beowulf Agate
who works for the CIA and has his girl killed by a russian agent from the KGB.

While a whole lifetime goes by, they search for each other looking for revenge,
but never succeed.

In a time and place far away each independently finds out about this cult,
this mafia founded by the all-evil Guillaume di Matarese. Some 200 pages are
devoted to the description of the evil practiced by Matarese and his followers.

The original purpose of Matarese was to create a decentralized form of govern-
ment where corporations held in his power could control the world with his
priciples as the law. This was not all bad, but suddenly Matarese dies and
his greedy followers (some 15 bastard sons and daughters he left) let their
corruption take over(does this sound like Russia and comunism or what?) and the
system gets distorted. These people then plan to kill the american president
to take over the world's richest nation substituting the president for one
of their own. A series of murders happen within 48 hours. None of them are
connected(apparently), and this causes some suspicion to arise from Beowulf
and Taleniekov - they know there's more to it.

So they finally meet and agree not to kill each other right away. As they
work together they get the chance to each save the other's life a couple of
times. This leaves them in debt with each other and so they avoid shooting
themselves throughout the next 130 pages.

Finally they penetrate a wall of cryptography, spionage, and lots of agents
in the forms of waitresses, beggars and men in suits and get to the heart of
Matarese where they kill everyone in Rambo style. Vasili gets killed to save
the life of Brandon Alan Scofield to repay the life of the girl he killed
long ago. Scofield and another girl (an ex guerrilla fighter)he met in italy
survive the Matarese raid and marry each other. Later in a 2.0 novel called
The Matarese Countdown, which takes place some 20 years later, Scofield and
Antonia help another young CIA agent destroy what was left of Matarese.

Cool book.
Can't sleep on it, better start early or you won't work the next day.
